The Christian Idea of the State

27 January, 2007

On 3 October 1936 the Christian philosopher Herman Dooyeweerd delivered a lecture on ‘The Christian idea of the State’.  This was subsequenty translated by John Kraay and published by the Craig Press in 1968.  I have recently obtained a copy of this book and have started a blog/study guide on it here.

The content is tangential to the course but will provide some excellent background for the  Romans 13 assignment on the State. Kraay in his translator’s preface describes it thus:

…this little gem is not limited to pre-World war II events or Dutch culture, but is a principal springboard for Christian political thought at any time and in every place.

The US Family Research Council has a blog here.  There are numerous posts on economics, education, family, human sexuality and bioethics.  It is edited by Joe Carter who has his own excellent blog The Evangelical Outpost.

Joe has posted this image of Bush’s State of the union speech.  The image speaks for itself.
