The Christian Idea of the State

By stevebishop

On 3 October 1936 the Christian philosopher Herman Dooyeweerd delivered a lecture on ‘The Christian idea of the State’.  This was subsequenty translated by John Kraay and published by the Craig Press in 1968.  I have recently obtained a copy of this book and have started a blog/study guide on it here.

The content is tangential to the course but will provide some excellent background for the  Romans 13 assignment on the State. Kraay in his translator’s preface describes it thus:

…this little gem is not limited to pre-World war II events or Dutch culture, but is a principal springboard for Christian political thought at any time and in every place.

    Steve,
Interesting blog. Dooyweerd is interesting but like Kuyper, in fact like everyone it seems, doesn’t expound a clear view of nation as opposed to state, although both obviously assume its validity. Do you know of any reformed writer’s work on nations and nationality? To me, given the current debates about immiration and multiculturalism it is a glaring ommision.
